If you’re looking for a minimal expense activity for you and your dog look no further than Salt Lake’s backyard! Utah is home to some of the best dog friendly hiking trails and is an excellent way to incorporate additional exercise into your pet’s life (and yours!)

Parleys Historic Nature Park

Are you familiar with Parley’s Historic Nature Park? It’s an ideal hike for dogs that love water, located at the southern edge of Salt Lake City (2740 S 2700 E). Parley’s is one of the best-off leash parks in the area. The trail offers amazing views of Parley’s Canyon, a wildlife refuge area, and the path is accompanied by Parley’s Creek. 

Historic Union Pacific Trail

Opened to the public as a state park in 1992, this trail has a starting elevation of 6,900’ while the trail head is located just off Bonanza Dr. and offers supreme views of Park City and Echo Reservoir The surface is primarily gravel with some sections that are composed of asphalt, making it tough on dogs with sensitive paws. Make sure to bring a leash as it is a requirement. 

Millcreek Canyon

Unleash the hounds! …On odd days, dogs are permitted to roam and hike alongside you off-leash every other day (5^th, 7^th, 21^st etc..). However, on even days dogs must be leashed. Surrounded by a densely forested canyon these Millcreek hikes are some of the best and offer ample adventure space for you and your hiking buddy.

Hiking Tips For You and Your Dog

• Always make sure to obey the trail rules, each trail has several signs at the start of each trail head allowing users to read further into what the overall trail expectations should be.
• Bring enough snacks and water for two. While temperatures in the mountains tend to be cooler than the valley, it’s still important to pack well. It’s important to remember that dogs don’t sweat like humans do. For them to cool down, making them a higher risk for overheating. Bringing snacks and fluids for you and your dog is extremely important. Collapsible water bowls come in handy for occasions like these.
